Yang Style Workshop - Downton
Based on Yang style Tai Chi, these regular full day workshops allow us to teach both the external postures and applications as well as the internal energy components (Neigong) that make your Tai Chi reach the next level.
If you main interest is an active and robust activity that is both stimulating and enjoyable, and includes partner connection practices, then this style is for you. The workshop has a flexible format with morning and afternoon sessions tailored to what our students need. Content is varied and includes popular forms like the 24 Step as well as partner hand and weapon forms.

Learning forms and applications from the 5 Section Taijiquan or traditional Yang family curriculum, with particular focus on sword study and advanced partner work (25 Energies and the 88 Sanshou).
5 Section Taijiquan
The Five Section Taijiquan is a modern routine created by Master Sam Masich. Having trained and taught for more than thirty years, he has been included as one of the 100 Extraordinary Chinese Martial Arts Practitioners in the world today by the International Wushu Sanshou Dao Association and is an awarded eighth degree master.
It is part of a comprehensive curriculum which includes:
- The basic five section tai chi solo form
- Five Section two person tai chi
- Five Section tai chi sword
- Five Section two person tai chi sword
- Five Section Chen style
- intermediate to advanced practices with sensing hands (Jue Shou) and energy work (Qigong).
Forms and exercises from '5 section taijiquan' (wuduan taijiquan in Chinese) have been adopted by Tai Chi schools around the world. The program has been designed to meet the needs of contemporary recreational taiji groups and to prepare committed students for traditional taijiquan training.
Yang Family Sanshou
When energy comes to us we must receive it as a gift, only then can we effectively neutralise and transform. Otherwise we can easily just be blocking it, avoiding it. If you do not have connection, can you listen? There are many life lessons that can be gained here; becoming fully comfortable in any situation is not a skill to be under estimated.
Also called the ʻAttack and Defendʼ or the ʻ88ʼ. Variations of this two person routine are most commonly derived from Chen Yanlinʼs 1943 manual: Taiji Boxing, Sabre, Sword, Pole, Sparring Compiled (Taiji Quan, Dao, Jian, Gun, Sanshou Hebian 陳炎林 太極拳刀劍桿散手). The routine is most popular in Taiwan where stylistic interpretations abound. In mainland China the sequence is probably best known in Shanghai, where Chen made his home. A variation of the form was also published by the China Wushu Committee, and features a short, matched set of solo movements executed simultaneously by each partner at the introduction and conclusion of the routine.
In Taiji Boxing, the sparring set is one of the major practices. It can make up for the insufficiencies of pushing hands and large rollback. Generally when doing pushing hands or large rollback, if you become easily disconnected from your opponent’s hands, or if you are having trouble sticking, warding off, or neutralizing, then the sparring set is valuable.
The sparring in Taiji Boxing is completely different from other styles of martial arts: it is a matter of being sticky and connected, of letting go of your plans and just responding to the opponent, of both neutralizing and issuing being carried out with subtlety rather than obviousness, and of moving continuously without interruption. Just like in pushing hands and large rollback, whatever the technique or posture, there is always neutralizing and issuing. They are to happen naturally, always directed from the hips, and without stiffness creating exerted action in the movements.
