Yang Baduanjin Workshop

Yang Baduanjin Workshop

The Masich Internal Arts Method Yang-style Baduanjin (8 Silk Brocade Neigong)

Screenshot 2020 07 11 at 10.25.21 am

"Taiji Baduanjin was originally created by the Yang family as a training method for mobilising qi and training jin. Like other forms of baduanjin there are 8 sections, but the movements are not the same. It can be distingushed by its 'forging and smelting' of the sections and joints of the body and strengthening the internal organs and their way of functioning."
- Yang Taiji Real Power, Sun Yizhao

It should be understood that there have been many variations of baduanjin throughout history. The Yang-style Taijiquan Baduanjin was never published directly by the Yang family themselves. Their practice is known to us through the lineage of Tian Zhaolin who was a live-in disciple of Yang Jianhou (Yang Chengfu's father). Tian shared part of the practice with Chen Yanlin (the second section that we are discussing, and parts of other sections) and this is what we see in Olsen's translation. In Chen's book he describes the twenty-one qigong-like exercises as 'Taijiquan Preliminary Strengthening Body and Mobilizing Qi Method' (tàijíquán chūbù jiànshēn yùnqìfǎ 太極拳初步健身運氣法). Although this is a part of the larger Yang baduanjin set, it is often presented (due to the popularity of Chen's presentation) as a stand-alone routine.
