Wu/Yang Style 108 Workshop - Downton

Wu/Yang Style 108 Workshop - Downton

If you are serious in your pursuit of Tai Chi (taijiquan) knowledge, understanding lineages becomes important, and making connections between your Wu style form and its mother form can be enlightening. All authentic taijiquan adheres to the same physical principles and manifestations of jing (energetic essence) irrespective of the style of form.

Most of us would acknowledge that modern Yang style Tai Chi comes from Yang Cheng Fu, the grandson of Yang Lu Chan (1799-1872), who founded the style. When he taught at the Imperial Court, Lu Chan developed the Yang style Small Frame, a modification of the Old Yang Form that took into account that the courtier’s dress had long sleeves and long robes which made certain movements awkward.

The founder of Wu Jian Quan's traditional Wu style Taijiquan is his father Quan Yu (1834-1902). Quan Yu was one of Yang Lu Chan's top students (even though he is recorded as a disciple of Lu Chan’s son Yang Ban Hou) and was said to have gained his master's skill in evasive techniques. It is likely the original Wu style form was developed from the Yang Small Frame.

So we have a connection. Really we are talking about the same form, adapted for different usage, and each with own advantages (and disadvantages).

This is the theme of this special full-immersion weekend workshop, using the Wu style to understand the Yang style. Future workshops will then begin a study of the Yang 108.

Friday evening 6.30pm - 9pm

  • a review of the Wu 108 sequence - great opportunity of those of you who have lapsed in your practise!

Saturday / Sunday 10am - 4pm (1hr for lunch)

  • Sat morning: Studying the stance and its phases from Yang to Wu (Tai yin/yang vs open/close).
  • Sat afternoon: Highlighted postural differences and similarities of the two forms (cloud hands - almost the same / repulse monkey - different).
  • Sun morning: The energies are the same - e.g. grasp birds tail (square) / white crane (diagonal).
  • Sun afternoon: Section 1 Wu and Yang comparison, finishing with a review of the whole Wu 108 form.

Cost £120 - a £30 advance deposit will secure your place.

Let us know if you can't manage the whole weekend - we may be able to offer you a discount for part-attendance.
