Day Workshop - Downton

Day Workshop - Downton

Screenshot 2020 07 11 at 10.25.21 am

Join us for one of our full day Sunday workshops in Downton, Wiltshire. The day consists of 2 sections:

  • The morning sessions can be seen as part of a series, studying the Yang family Baduanjin (8 Brocade) from 10am to 11.30am, followed by Tai Chi Qigong Shibashi Set 2 from 11.30am to 1pm.
  • Afternoons will cover different topics from our traditional curriculum - see below.

If you used to come to come to our classes but life got in the way and you stopped attending, the morning sessions are a great way to get back into the swing of learning Tai Chi and Qigong without having to worry about what you remember or holding up the class in any way.

You are welcome to attend part or all of the day to suit your interests - charges are made on an hourly basis with a maximum capped rate of £55 for the day. The morning sessions are suitable for all wishing to develop their background knowledge of Tai Chi and Qigong, whereas the afternoon workshops are primarily for students who have already studied (to any level) the topic being covered. If you have not studied a topic before but are interested in finding out more, please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. first.

The Yang-style Taijiquan Baduanjin was originally an indoor family internal energy work (neigong) of the Yang Family - a secret weapon of sorts. It can be seen variously as a solid warmup and strength and flexibility practice or as an essential piece of the Yang-style Taijiquan curriculum. There is a specific and logical order to the sequence, as taught by our teacher Sam Masich in the Masich Internal Arts Method (MIAM); this has to do with harminizing and increasing Qi circulation and preparing the practioner for martial arts practice. However in our experience we have also found that the sets can quite easily be practised out of sequence if you have a particular need, e.g. to develop a weaker part of your structure and alignments.

This workshop will cover:

  • Section Three: The Waist and Spine (as warmups)
  • Section Six: Zhan Zhuang (Stand like a Post)

Beginners are welcome (see our Qigong page for more info).

Tai Chi Qigong Shibashi Set 2

Tai Chi Qigong Shibashi Set 2 builds on Shibashi Set 1, but can also be learned by complete beginners. Set 2 works with the connection to Earth and allowing the Earth energy to naturally rise and support us. The exchange of qi between Heaven and Earth is happening in humans all the time, but we can influence it and enhance it for health and well-being by practising qigong.

The movements of Set 2 are more challenging than Set 1 and will not be taught in these workshops as a follow-along exercise class. There is more stepping, turning and balancing than in set 1 and Set 2 builds up leg strength as well as filling us with yin. Some workshops may only work on one or two new moves from the set, depending on how participants are integrating the material. Movements and components will be taught in more depth than in the format we use for teaching set 1, and in workshop format participants can be given individual corrections. There will also be some core work on Zhan Zhuang standing postures, breathing, and exercises to feel and move qi. We will also revisit some moves from Set 1 to compare, contrast and improve on them.

All welcome, no pre-requisites (see our Qigong page for more info).

Yang Style 108 Tai Chi

It is generally acknowledged that modern Yang style Tai Chi comes from Yang Cheng Fu, the grandson of Yang Lu Chan (1799-1872), who founded the style. The lineage continues to this day through Grandmaster Yang Jun, Cheng Fu's grandson. Our study of the 108 hand form comes from our teacher Sam Masich, founder of MIAM (the Masich Internal Arts Method). Master Masich is a formal disciple of Grandmasters Liang Shou-Yu and Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming, with other important early influences including Jou Tsung Hwa and Yang Zhenduo (Yang Cheng Fu's son).

This session is taught by Patrick Foley, who has nearly 30 years of experience in traditional Taiji and Neigong practices. He was taught Wu style by Brian Cooper (Senior instructor of Master Bruce Frantzis) and Yang style by Master Sam Masich (to whom he is Indoor Student).

Any Taijiquan practitioner who has some form experience, either studying with us or another teacher, is welcome to this session.
